In observation of Black History Month the PetersenAutomotiveMuseum proudly presents the documentary "For Gold & Glory."
During the 1920s, when the Ku Klux Klan and other segregationist groups cast a dark shadow across the social and political landscape of the Midwestern United States, a group of dedicated black sportsmen created the single largest sporting event ever held for African Americans - a 100-mile auto racing event held each year from 1924-1936 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds and other national venues. The event celebrated speed, talent, and the best of black culture in an era of new cultural identity and the birth of jazz.
"For Gold & Glory" is a uniquely American story that chronicles the history of the black auto racing league through the eyes and emotions of the circuit's greatest driver, Charlie Wiggins, a four-time 'Gold and Glory' champion who earned the title "the Negro Speed King." This award-winning film is narrated by acclaimed actor Ossie Davis and set to a memorable musical score by jazz legend, Pulitzer and Grammy nominee Dr. David Baker.
RSVPs recommended. Free soft drinks and popcorn will be served. Running time is approximately one hour.
